About SU2C Canada

What is the goal of Stand Up To Cancer?

Simply put, Stand Up To Cancer Canada’s (SU2C Canada) goal is to end cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death in Canada by building awareness and educating the public about cancer prevention, and by raising funds to accelerate research that will help transform cancer from a disease that takes far too many lives to one people survive.

SU2C Canada was founded on the belief that researchers understand the basic science of cancer research, and now is the time to take that understanding to the next level through interdisciplinary collaboration to translate this knowledge to the clinic—to accelerate real advances in patient treatment and cancer prevention.

Stand Up To Cancer Canada’s innovative approach to research is designed to eliminate barriers that have traditionally inhibited creativity and collaboration, enabling the best and brightest investigators from leading institutions across the country and internationally to work together.

A distinctive feature of SU2C Canada-funded research is the “Dream Team” concept, in which researchers from different universities or other institutions across multiple provinces come together to share resources and data and work collaboratively to develop new and innovative therapies for cancer.

How is Stand Up To Cancer Canada different from Stand Up To Cancer in the U.S.?

Stand Up To Cancer Canada (SU2C Canada) and Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) share a common mission to make cancer patients into cancer survivors through accelerated, collaborative research that improves cancer treatments and outcomes for patients sooner. Both SU2C Canada and SU2C utilize the entertainment industry’s resources to engage the public in supporting and contributing to these initiatives. Stand Up To Cancer Canada is, a Canadian Registered Charity (Reg# 80550 6730 RR0001). Stand Up To Cancer is a division of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States. Each organization has its own Board of Directors that include senior executives of networks in their respective countries. Scientific research funded by SU2C Canada is evaluated, recommended and monitored by the SU2C Canada Scientific Advisory Committee. The US-based SU2C initiative has a separate scientific advisory committee. SU2C Canada and SU2C share a common mission; however, they are separate and distinct programs.

What is a Dream Team?

Dream Teams are multidisciplinary, multi-institutional and collaborative groups of scientists that are responsible for conducting novel, groundbreaking cancer research projects that address critical problems in patient care. Dream Teams are made up of the best scientists who are on the verge of critical discoveries that can provide direct patient benefit in the shortest amount of time possible. STand Up To Cancer Canada Dream Teams receive funding over a four-year funding cycle with the mandate to seek to make improvements in patient outcomes.

What is the Innovative Research Grant program?

The goal of the Innovative Research Grant (IRG) program is to support the next generation of cancer research leaders. The projects all represent new approaches to the most important and challenging problems facing cancer researchers today. Currently the IRG program only operates in the US under the US-based Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), but awardees collaborate with Stand Up To Cancer Canada (SU2C Canada) and SU2C Dream Teams, annually at the SU2C Scientific Summit.

What if a cheque is made out to me and not Stand Up To Cancer Canada?

If a donor writes a cheque to you instead of Stand Up To Cancer Canada (SU2C Canada) for your fundraiser, please endorse the back of the cheque with your signature and add ‘Payable to SU2C Canada.’ We will then provide a tax receipt to the account holder named on the cheque.

Can I accept the bulk of the donations for my event and write one cheque to Stand Up To Cancer Canada?

We do not recommend this for two reasons:

  1. The IRS may consider this income and you could potentially be taxed.
  2. Since the cheque is coming from you and not directly from your donors, your donors will not receive tax receipts for their contributions.

It is best to have each donor write a cheque payable to Stand Up To Cancer Canada for their desired amount, which you can then collect and mail in at one time with the Fundraiser Cheque Donation form. SU2C Canada will then be able to generate tax receipts for each donor.

Can I mail in cash donations collected at my fundraiser?

If a business donates goods or services to my event, will they receive a tax credit from Stand Up To Cancer Canada?

Unfortunately, we cannot generate tax credits for a business that donates goods or services to your fundraiser since the donation does not go directly to Stand Up To Cancer Canada.
