About Stand Up To Cancer Canada

What is the goal of Stand Up To Cancer?

Simply put, Stand Up To Cancer Canada’s goal is to end cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death by raising funds to accelerate research that will help transform cancer from a disease that takes far too many lives to one people survive. The SU2C Canada movement is founded on the belief that researchers understand the basic science of cancer research, and now is the time to take that understanding to the next level through interdisciplinary collaboration to translate this knowledge to the clinic—to accelerate real advances in patient treatment and cancer prevention. Stand Up To Cancer Canada’s innovative approach to research is designed to eliminate barriers that have traditionally inhibited creativity and collaboration, enabling the best and brightest investigators from leading institutions across the country and internationally to work together. A distinctive feature of SU2C-funded research is the “Dream Team” concept, in which researchers from different universities or other institutions come together to share resources and data and work collaboratively to develop new and innovative therapies for cancer. The U.S.-based SU2C program (founded in 2008) has launched 12 Dream Teams, two smaller Translational Research Teams and awarded funding to 26 early-career investigators conducting high-risk, potentially high-reward research under the Innovative Research Program. More than 750 researchers are involved overall, working at 112 institutions in six countries, including Canada. Over 140 clinical trials have been planned, initiated or launched involving more than 5,000 patients. U.S.-based SU2C program is currently funding scientists and research at Canadian institutions including the BC Cancer Research Centre, The Hospital for Sick Children, McMaster University and the University of British Columbia.

How is Stand Up To Cancer Canada different from Stand Up To Cancer in the U.S.?

Stand Up To Cancer Canada (SU2C Canada) and Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) share a common mission to make cancer patients into cancer survivors through accelerated, collaborative research that improves cancer treatments and outcomes for patients sooner. Both SU2C Canada and SU2Cutilize the entertainment industry’s resources to engage the public in supporting and contributing to these initiatives. Stand Up To Cancer Canada is an initiative of the EIF Canada, a Canadian Registered Charity. Stand Up To Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States. Each organization has its own Board of Directors that include senior executives of networks in their respective countries. Scientific research funded by SU2C Canada will be evaluated, recommended and monitored by the SU2C Canada Scientific Advisory Committee. The US-based SU2C initiative has a separate scientific advisory committee. SU2C Canada and SU2C share a common mission, however, they are separate and distinct programs.

What is a Dream Team?

Dream Teams are multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional and collaborative groups of scientists that are responsible for conducting novel, groundbreaking cancer research projects that address critical problems in patient care. Dream Teams are made up of the best scientists who are on te verge of possible discoveries that can provide direct patient benefit in the shortest amount of time possible. SU2C Canada Dream Teams receive funding over a four-year funding cycle with the mandate to seek to make improvements in patient outcomes.

The goal of the Innovative Research Grant program is to support the next generation of cancer research leaders. The projects all represent new approaches to the most important and challenging problems facing cancer researchers today. Currently the IRG program only operates in the US, but awardees collaborate with all Dream Teams, both U.S. and Canadian-based teams, annually at the SU2C Scientific Summit.
